Summary:

I watch the movie In Time, starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried. This movie takes place in the future and is about a guy name Will Scales who lives with his mother in the ghetto. He works as a factory work and gets paid in time. Genetic alteration has allowed for humanity to stop aging at 25 and people are required to earn more time or die within a year ofr turning 25. After suffering the lost of his mom after she ran out of time, he saves a rich guy who is trying to kill himself in a bar with over a century of time. This guy gives Will all his time when he was sleeping but only kept 5mins just enough time to walk away and die. Will takes this time and travels to the richer area to enjoy life but a Time keeper who tracks people’s time notice a change in time and comes for Will. When Will realizes their after him he takes Sylvia Wise hostage who is the daughter of Rich Phillipee Wise. After keeping her hostage for a couple hours, she soon realizes how bad it is for those who aren’t wealthy and helps will get more time for those who are poor with a lot of chasing, shooting and tons of action.

Application/Analysis:

Watching this movie, there are tons of gender role stereotypes as well as weigth stereotypes. The first stereotype that I noticed is that there are no scenes of female workers. Everyone that works where Will works are males and so are the tellers who pay them in time. I did notice that they showed a female waitress and a female secratary. This goes to the stereotype that men work and women stay at home. Another stereotype that exist is that pretty much every woman in this movie are thin and very attractive, even those who lived in the “ghetto” When Will went to the richer areas, every woman had a very nice body and well groomed. Even though this movie is suppose to be in the future I noticed a lot of practices. One that stuck out the most was when Will played poker with a richer guy and won, he invited him to his house to a party and to meet his family and introduce him specifically to his daughter. A few more aspects where I noticed some gender role stereotypes is when he took the daughter hostage. Being that her took her hostage and not the Dad when he had equal opportunity shows that woman are helpless and defensely. He took the daughter because he figured the Dad would do anything to get his daughter back, and even give all the time he had.

Summary:

I overall loved this move and I’ve watched it a hundred times. It’s interesting and very creative. Paying attention to the gender role stereotypes in this movie makes me wonder did they do it on purpose or is it because women are already portrayed as that most of the time we as humans don’t think about them in other light. We don’t see women as playing/being dominant roles in society and when they are, they are always stereotyped to be sexy, wearing less clothes, or something that is eye catching. There are a lot of gender role stereotypes in this movie. Even when the rich guy was at the bar flashing his century of time, women were crawling all over him just because he was rich with time and females love a guy who has some type of status which is portrayed in lots of movies today. All in all, this was a good movie with the gender roles being portrayed but there are lots of other stereotypes that can be talk about as well like race stereotypes, cultures, size, etc…
